6:02 a.m., Saturday morning. Itââ¬â¢s early but my eyes crack open slightly and I roll underneath my covers. I stretch my arms and legs, making loud groans as my body twists and turns. Half awake, my legs drag me to the window and I pull up the shades. Blinded by the morning light, my fingers feel for the window locks and unlock them. As I pull open the window the cold, winter air fills my room. I shiver, hugging myself to hold in the warmth. My eyes finally adjust and a smile creeps across my face. Winterââ¬â¢s first snow has arrived. I take one last whiff of the morning air and shut my window gently. Everyone is still sleeping, enjoying the comforting warmth of their beds. However, I am wide awake and excited. Slowly, I strip off my pajamas and pull on a first layer of clothing. Heading to the kitchen, I start my parentsââ¬â¢ coffee and slide a tray of biscuits into the oven. It wonââ¬â¢t be long before everyone is awake. Lightly tiptoeing to the closet and opening the door soundlessly, I rummage through the mess. At last I spot the bag. All the way in the back closet it sits and has been sitting since last winter. I notice my mother as usual, has clearly labeled the outside ââ¬Å"Winter Stuffâ⬠and folded all the contents. With a bit of excitement, I tip the bag upside down letting the insides pile onto the floor. Sorting through the items one by one, I separate them into each family memberââ¬â¢s belongings. The smell of biscuits has filled the kitchen and is slowly making its way to the bedrooms. It wonââ¬â¢t be much longer now. A rustling sounds from my parentsââ¬â¢ room and then a creak from the bed. A single grunt escapes my dadââ¬â¢s mouth and his footsteps begin. Scratching his head, he enters the kitchen. He notices the biscuits and the mess Iââ¬â¢ve made on the floor. He chuckles softly and smiles at me. One by one they wake up and enter the kitchen looking slightly dazed and confused. They catch a glimpse of what I have started and they all smile immediately. This isnââ¬â¢t just my favorite family tradition. My little brother and sister run towards the window and stare out in awe. They giggle excitedly and high-five each other. After eating our breakfast, each of us grab our pile of ââ¬Å"Winter Stuffâ⬠and head to our rooms to change. My dad hollers, ââ¬Å"Are you guys ready yet?â⬠and we all sprint as fast as we can

Causes and Solutions of Obesity Essay
If you can prolong your life, and make yourself feel better about who you are then why not overcome this overweight issue. In todayââ¬â¢s world we are facing an epidemic that seems to be affecting even are young at an early age. We all know that obesity can have adverse effects on health, well-being, and relationship, and can be solved by eating organic food, exercising, and discipline. We are here to find out the different causes of obesity, and find out what we can do to overcome this fast growing epidemic. ââ¬Å"Although people in the Unites States might not be eating more, they are gaining weight. According to the U.S Department of Agriculture, fat consumption by people in the United States has declined during past decades, but calorie expenditure has gone down as well. Adults are not burning the calories they are consuming, and as a result, obesity rates increased by 214 percent between 1950 and 2000. Two out of every three people in the U.S. were obese or overweight in 2010â⬠. (Bird, 2011, March 26, p.1). They are several solutions that can be implemented to these causes, and some are individual, community, and government solutions. I feel it is everyoneââ¬â¢s own responsibility to make they maintain their own health. Obesity could occur in all humans, obesity does not care what race you are or even the time you have lived in. ââ¬Å"Ancient Egyptians are said to consider obesity as a disease, having been drawn in a wall of depicted illnessesâ⬠. ââ¬Å"The Aztecs believed that obesity was supernatural, an affliction of the godsâ⬠. (Miles, 2006, p.1). Obesity begins in a membrane enclosed organelle known as mitochondria. Mitochondria can be defined as the part of the cell that is responsible for energy production. According to research mitochondria is believed to be the source where obesity begins. ââ¬Å"My clinical work and research with patients with immune disorders, chronic fatigue, chemical sensitivity and obesity have led me to the conclusion that the primary site of catabolic maladaptation, and the obesity that it causes, is in the mitochondria.â⬠(Where Does Obesity Begin,p.1). There are many speculations that obesity has been around for a long period time, but does anyone r eally know when obesity really started. There are many causes of obesity, and genes play a small role in how it can affect a person in the future. ââ¬Å"Science shows that genetics plays a role in obesity. Genes can directly cause obesity in disorders such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome and Prader-Willi syndromeâ⬠. (Etiology, n.d.p.1). Even though genes play a role other factors come into play like the behavior of the individual. It can also depend on incidence of obesity in the family . ââ¬Å"It is now well established that overweight and the different forms of obesity are conditions tending to concentrate within a family. Obesity risk is two to eight times higher for a person with a family history as opposed to a person with no family history of obesity, and an even higher risk is observed in cases of severe obesityâ⬠. Furthermore the way are genes have been sequenced can be linked to obesity. ââ¬Å"Sequence variations within a pool of 56 different genes have been reported as being related to obesity phenotypes, h owever, only ten of those genes showed positive results in at least five different studiesâ⬠. (Etiology, n.d. p.1). Even though genes play a part in cases of obesity they can still be overcome with different solutions. For example, I come from a family that is generally overweight, but I have chosen to change my lifestyle. I learned to exercise more frequently and not consume more than I need to at times. ââ¬Å"Since there is only a small population of obese people who have been affected by the genetics of their family tree, it suggests that genes are not necessarily a fate that cannot be outdone. Obesity and the prevention of obesity can be aided with lifestyle changes and behaviors that include a healthy diet, increased physical activity, as well as medicationâ⬠. (What Role Does Genetics, para.1). We are all born with genes, and it is normal to inherit these genes from your parents which can influence obesity. We as people enjoy tasty food which makes us devour unhealthy foods. This is where the fast food industry takes an immense toll on our country. There are certain items placed in these foods that can make people feel the need to eat these foods on a regular basis. ââ¬Å"Almost all items on fast food menus are deep fried or packed with sugar, and many even contain chemicals or preservatives that further their addictive capabilitiesâ⬠. Just the other day I was affected by these hormones as I craved a ultimate cheeseburger from Jack in the Box. There are also factors which consist of what are fed to the sources of these treats. The animals are given certain hormones that are returned to us since we are consuming them in the process. ââ¬Å"Many chains add hormones to the feed that they give to their livestock, which in turn ends up on a burger or in a wrap. These hormones are mainly used to increase the size or productivity of the animals being used, and some are both addicting and harmful to humansâ⬠. (Brad, 2009, p.1). Furthermore, convenience of these places makes it stress-free for societies to continue to purchase foods at these establishments. For instance, for people who are always in a rush are not able to make lunches for them, so they turn to the most convenient way to fill their hunger. ââ¬Å"If youââ¬â¢re trying to manage a busy career, start a side business, have community responsibilities, and have a spouse and children at home (a situation that sounds awfully familiar to me), convenience can be an enormously important factorâ⬠. There is another issue of money if you are low on funds are looking for something to your taste you are able to purchase items off the dollar menu. Fast food industries can be found in almost every corner so it can be defined as a major role in our struggle. Even if they are numerous causes for obesity there are still many solutions that can be implemented to reduce or even cease this issue. There are plenty of forms of exercise that can be performed to lose weight, and exercise plans can be made to keep the pounds off once lost. ââ¬Å"Obesity exercise solutions can help obese people lose weight and body fat safely. An exercise plan that is designed for obese people who have a limited range of motion can be an effective obesity treatment when combined with a nutritious diet planâ⬠. (Obesity Exercise, 2009, p.1) Even if you do not have time to spare there is always other things like parking further away at the parking lot. There other benefits that comes hand in hand with physical training, and these are the health benefits. ââ¬Å"Reducing your risk of dying from heart disease or stroke, lowering your risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, colon cancer, and diabetesâ⬠(Arthur, 2009, p.1). According to surveys conducted the leading cause of death in the United States come from cardiovascular disease. Physical health has been implemented for ages now, and it can be performed in certain jobs that require manual labor. In conclusion it might be the best way to reduce the chance of becoming obese or cure obesity. ââ¬Å"Experts agree that regular exercise is one of the most effective ways to prevent obesity.â⬠(Arthur, 2009, p.1). If you require motivation to help you hit the gym or apply a certain exercise routine to your life do it with a buddy. You can also join groups like the zumba classes, or you can make a goal for yourself to make it like a game. A diet of healthy eating can be ministered to help overcome obesity. Have you ever wanted a fresher taste to compliment your taste buds? Well organic foods are the way to go. Organic foods can be defined to encourage a healthier way of life, and even start to show positives outcomes to your body. ââ¬Å"Organic food promotes healthy patterns of cell division and differentiation, and lays the groundwork for normal endocrine system regulation of blood sugars, lipids, energy intake, and immune system functionsâ⬠. (Organic Pathways, para.1). I know some people are very limited when it comes to spending money on expensive food, but organic foods can even be grown to save money. Furthermore you are able to buy organic foods at wholesale prices at your convenience. Also adding small portions to your healthy diet plan can help reduce weight in the long run. ââ¬Å"When you eat a large portion of food, glucose levels rise quickly. When your bloodstream is flooded with glucose, your pancreas releases insulin to move that glucose into your cells for use. But the faster glucose levels rise, the more likely it is that your pancreas will produce too much insulin, leading to low blood sugar, called hypoglycemia. Your brain is tricked into thinking you need more glucose and you start to feel hungryâ⬠. (Maura, 2011, p.1). Adding this to your daily regimen can help control over eating, and it can also stabilize your hunger. Talk to a nutritionist to see what would be best for your current situation. In conclusion, they are numerous causes and solutions that are associated with obesity, and it is up to you to decide which choices would best to make. If we do not do anything about it now obesity will continue to rise and overtake us in a very young age. According to statistics if we maintain this rise in obesity by 2030 eighty five percent of the United States will be obese. Implementing these solutions we can succeed in creating a better way of life for all people. We do not need to be like the society in the movie Wall E where all the people are obese! Wordsworth v Browning
The Power of Happiness As Christopher Morley once said ,â⬠there Is only one success ââ¬â to spend your life In your own wayâ⬠. Similarly, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and William Wordsmith both have successfully happy lives, although they are consoled in different ways.In both ââ¬Å"How Do I Love Theeâ⬠by Elizabeth Browning and ââ¬Å"l Wandered Lonely As A Cloudâ⬠by William Wordsmith, there is a common theme of happiness depicted through the use of diction, however, Browning presents reasons as to why she achieves happiness from a physical human companion, whereas in Wordsmiths, he cuisses how his happiness comes from the Inanimate prospects of nature, both using similes and personification to relay this to the reader. In ââ¬Å"How Do Love Theeâ⬠, Browning lists the multitude of ways she loves her husband.A theme of happiness pervades through the entirety of the poem as she describes this love she has with her husband. Browning states ââ¬Å"my soul ca n reach, when feeling out of sight, for the ends of Being and ideal Graceâ⬠(3-4). Through the personification of her soul, Browning reveals her dependence on her husband for her happiness, not that this is necessarily a bad thing. She simply cannot fathom living without him, therefore making him the source of her happiness. Along with the use of personification, Browning depicts her love for her husband through multiple similes. She ââ¬Å"love[s] thee freely, as men strive for Rightâ⬠(Browning 7), indicating her natural and free love for her husband. While other people and things in life take work and persistence, loving him comes easily and naturally to her. Similarly, she ââ¬Å"love[s] thee with the breath, Smiles, tears of all [her] lifeâ⬠(Browning 12-13), continuing to show her presents and constant love for him with the use of enjambment. One could grasp the love and devotion she has for her husband in this one line where she essentially says he is everything to her.Browning also states ââ¬Å". And, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after deathâ⬠, relaying also the theme of happiness In accordance with her constant dependence on her husband (14). Along with expressing her undying love for her husband, Browning shows that this love brings her pure happiness. Using words such as ââ¬Å"sunâ⬠, ââ¬Å"smilesâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"childhoodâ⬠, Borrowing's diction helps to relay the theme of happiness to the reader. Because Browning uses these words to portray a joyful tone, the reader can infer the happiness that her husband Robert brings to her.Wordsmith's poem, while still having a theme of happiness, shows how Wordsmith relies solely on the beauty of nature to bring him happiness, as opposed to a person. Though Browning needs a human companion, as many people do, to make her happy, Wordsmith finds conclusive happiness in the inanimate things of nature. Thinking back to a time of complete content, Wordsmith describes daffodils ââ¬Å"tossing their heads in sprightly danceâ⬠(12). In this particular line of the poem, Wordsmith uses personification to describe the daffodils in an upbeat demeanor. He knows that the daffodils and things of nature will stay with him constantly through his life. Therefore, through the sleep ââ¬Å"continuous as the stars that careful selection of figurative language. As he describes the beauty and grace of the daffodils, Wordsmith ââ¬Å"could not but be gay In such a Jocund company', using enjambment to show that the daffodils bring him a happiness he cannot help nor deny (15-16). Although Browning needs the aid and presence off human being, Wordsmith relishes in ââ¬Å"the bliss of solitudeâ⬠(22), using only the things of nature to brighten his mood and devote his life.In addition, when in ââ¬Å"vacant or pensive moodâ⬠(20) he thinks about the daffodils and is immediately consoled Just by the memory of their beauty, thus reiterating his infatuation with nature. In addition to using figurative language, Wordsmith uses diction to also encompass the intended theme of happiness. The words ââ¬Å"flutteringâ⬠, ââ¬Å"gleeâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"pleasureâ⬠give off a tone of Joy, therefore continuing the theme of happiness throughout the poem. One could infer from his usage of these words that the fiddles and nature bring him the happiness he references throughout the poem.Just like Wordsmith and Browning, we all have different things in life that make us happy, whether it be dancing, drawing, swimming, or baking. We all have that one thing to depend on when all else in the world seems wrong or against us. Wordsmith and Browning depict this in their poems, therefore continually relating to the common man and the literary era of romanticism. These poems they have shared with the world help readers to do what they are passionate about and happiness will come.

Zara vs Gap Essay Example
Zara vs Gap Essay Example Zara vs Gap Paper Zara vs Gap Paper A Zara store in China. The chains owner, Inditex, surpassed Gap Inc. as the worlds biggest specialty retailer in the second quarter. But the lead may already have vanished. Image: epa/Corbis Based on first-quarter results, Zara International of Spain has closed the gap on Gap Inc., becoming the worlds largest fashion retailer by revenue, the Daily Telegraph points out today. Inditex, Zaras parent company, said first-quarter revenue rose 9 percent to 2.2 billion euros, or $3.46 billion at the time, while Gaps sales drooped 10 percent to $3.38 billion in the same period. Gap is certainly one of the mall-based retailers that has taken the hardest beating over the past year, posting double-digit declines in same-stores sales during many months as cash-strapped Americans cut back on discretionary purchasing. Zara, on the other hand, has continued to make good. Consumers are responding to the retailers fast fashion approach of translating runway looks into retail items at lightning speed, which has meant an ever-changing assortment of cheap, fashionable items in stores. The ability to offer inexpensive and à ¼aut;ber-trendy looks to consumers is still relatively new, and is changing the game for anyone looking to get a share of a young womans wallet. Gap hasnt adapted to the sea change all too well, having stubbornly stuck to its once-popular practical basics approach for too long. When times are tough, those are exactly the apparel items for which people are likely to start trading down to Walmart. Maybe its just Olympics fever talking, but were feeling particularly patriotic today, so here are a few reasons why Gap should keep its chin up: 1. The bulk of Zaras 3,900 stores are outside the U.S., where the consumer-spending environment has been significantly stronger during the first half of the year. Gap is unfortunate enough to do more than two-thirds of its business in North America. 2. An $80 million victory over Gap in sales can easily be explained away by the weakness of the dollar against the euro. Gap reports its results (not to mention, sells most of its inventory) in dollars, while Zara has the benefit of dealing in euros. (Indeed, the recent bounce in the buck would have Gap back on top if the figures were converted at todays rate.) 3. While Zara might have perfected the formula for attracting fashion-forward young women, its mens offerings are still nothing to write home about. New research shows that menswear is beginning to be the locus of retail growth, as a shift in mainstream mens fashion has made it essential to buy new basics. Meanwhile, women are tending to put off buying trendy items until the economy improves. So Zara, dont be so quick to dance on Gaps grave, okay?

Ids
Ids The Trial: The trial has significance because it is the only reason, at least the only explanation the writer gives to the reader, why the narrator has been put here alone. The trial is an allusion to the Spanish Inquisition. The whole event foreshadows a terrible punishment, and not on of a normal standard like today's but quite a cruel and unusual one.The Room: The room id completely dark. The narrator was quite obsessed with finding the size of his prison. He described the walls to be very "cold"Ãâà and "smooth"Ãâà . The whole reason he explores this room is to find a mean of escape. Which he doesn't foreshadowing a loss of sanity and unusual or omnious events to come. The room is isolation to the world more or less making the narrator trapped within his own mind. The Pit: The pit is in the center of the room.Microsoft Narrator

Mozart Effect Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Mozart Effect - Essay Example Participants who listened to a piece of Mozart music 10 minutes before completing a spatial ability assignment requiring mental concentration improved drastically than those who had 10 minutes of silence or those who had 10 minutes of verbal relaxation tape. The effect occurred when the participants were tested immediately and the improved ability disappeared within an hour. This brought another aspect of Mozart effect that it was temporal. The size of the effect when measured was an equivalent of 8 to 9 IQ points. Mozart effect can be described as the effect felt after listening to particular pieces of Mozart music. From the experiment, it is interesting to see how music can have effect on the reasoning of a human being. An improvement in the ability to contain mental images from physical objects within a short time is quite tremendous. During my listening experiment, I choose one of the Mozartââ¬â¢s compositions called Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major. The sonata is a melody and it consists of three movements; allegro con spirito, andante and molto allegro. The first movement allegro con spirito begins in a D major which sets the tone with a strong introduction. Both pianos set the theme simultaneously. In the second movement andante the pace is very relaxed and the melody played by both pianos. In this movement there is no strong climax. The third movement molto allegro begins with a racing theme. The reason for this choice is that the music is a melody. I wanted to feel the same effect felt during the Rauscher experiment. It is one of the Mozartââ¬â¢s piano compositions and it reflects the intelligence of the composer. It has no verbal phrases and it is quite fascinating when listening to it. Mozart music can be effectively used in improving learning abilities. Its ability to improve spatial and temporal reasoning tasks will be helpful in providing therapy. It can be used as a therapy for children with learning

The Battle of the Imjin River Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The Battle of the Imjin River - Essay Example The Chinese troops managed to cross the river and by the next day afternoon, while the first wave of attacks were assumed to have been completed, however, by the evening the Glosters were attacked (The Battle of Imjin River, n.d.). The above details reflect on the first wave of attacks that occurred in the battle of the Imjin River. In the present study, the focus has been placed on the battle and its associated knowledge. The Battle of the Imjin River: Considering the troops in the battle, the Chinese troops were led by The-huai Peng who was the General Commander of the group. They had a lack of experienced and well-trained troops. However circumstances had forced the General to lead the troops and the battle that was fought was a hard one. This was more because the UN troops in contrary to the Chinese men were more experienced, even though less in number. They had well trained and well equipped having F-86 Sabres and MiG 15s at loading bay, and thus were more effective against the Chinese troops. Moreover the pilots of the UN troops were veterans from the Second World War, while on the other hand, the Chinese pilots were too inexperienced (Paul & Spirit, 2008). The Battle of the Imjin River had initiated during the Korean War. ... They intended to separate a major part of I Corps that would be entrapped back with the sea. Peng had focused on the fact that speed was essential in their movement and his plans intended his groups to reach Seoul within 36 hours once they had crossed the starting lines. However these plans had to fall in front of the UN troop which was the 29th brigade of the British and lied directly across the path of the 63rd Army as planned by the Chinese (Paul & Spirit, 2008). The 29th brigade of the British constituted the 1st Battalions from the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, the Gloucestershire Regiment, and the Royal Ulster Rifles. Along with these, a small battalion from Belgium was joined that moved under the command of Brigadier Tom Brodie. 25-pounder guns of 45 Field Regiment were in support of the troop accompanied by Royal Artillery, and 4.2 inch mortars of 170 Mortar Battery, Royal Artillery. The Centurion Tanks of the 8th Kingââ¬â¢s Royal Irish Hussars were associated with the t roops of the brigade battalion. The Brigade had the responsibility of covering around 15 kilometre section of the front line (Paul & Spirit, 2008). The Glosters were separated from the Fusiliers by a 3 kilometre gap. The Castle Hill (Point 148), Point 182, and Point 144 were all held by the Glosters where all of these points had some considerable distances between them. 773 men were involved in the front line sections of the Glosters that included the reserves and the men of the Royal Artillery too. Lieutenant Colonel James Carne DSO was in charge of the Glosters. He was a fighter in the earlier campaigns of the Korean War that had been in place during that time. The initial contact between the two parties had
